- Ancient Phoenician city (modern Jebeil), 32
- km/20 mi N of Beirut, Lebanon. Known to the
- Assyrians and Babylonians as Gubla, it had a
- thriving export of cedar and pinewood to
- Egypt as early as 1500 BC. In Roman times it
- boasted an amphitheatre, baths, and a temple
- dedicated to an unknown male god, and was
- known for its celebration of the resurrection
- of Adonis, worshipped as a god of vegetation.
